i'd say one male and one female only, any more than that (especially more males), and you're asking for a fight! there was a thread on this a little while back, i'll look for it

they are very selective and agressive...do you plan to breed them? if so, the m/f combo will be fine....if not, id go for 1 con with some other cichlids that can handle them ...with lots of hiding places, you could go for 2 but they would constanly chase eachother....I have a 20 gal tank with approx 80-100 babies that im raising and they are a hoot to watch...fun fun fish to breed but are like rabbits...feed n water and poof, babies LOL
