Cichlids for a cichlid

Dear Friends,
I posted this question as a reply to my own thread last week, but don't think anyone looked at it, so thought I'd try again.

I'm the one who has successfully bred a pair of convict cichlids in under a month of setting up her first tank, and then promptly killed (an accident, I promise, guv!) my female.

Looks like Daddy is going to bring these fry up to be fish, so that will be my next problem (how to get rid of 70 little convicts), but once they're all gone and Daddy is all alone again, I was wondering what kinds of fish I might put with him other than another female convict.

I was thinking firemouth, for one. A salvin's cichlid (nandopsis salvini) sounds of equal size and temperment, too. Could I have one of each in the 125-litre (27 gallon) tank with the Convict and the bristlenose plec (who hides all day)?

Any other suggestions?

congrats on daddy doing his job!! as far as getting rid of them, call around to your LFS to see if they are interested...I know around here, they are not as they breed so easily....putting anything in with him is going to be a tough one..they dont like other fish at all..so maybe remove him, change around the decorations, then put him back in with whatever you are going to have...ive also heard that the salvins are alot like them but I think a 27 gal wouldnt be enough room for them to have their own area..you would have major wars IMO.., in a smaller tank, im not sure any fish would be good with a con...I hope others have more to suggest tho ...goodluck!

Thanks, Shawnie. You might be right about shops not being interested. My first enquiry was met with great luke-warmth-ness (hmmm ... where's my dictionary??!!!), but then again, the fry had just hatched so there were high chances nothing would be around for selling when it came down to it. Little did they know ...

Well, I guess it just takes us back to square one, meaning purchasing another female and starting over again, once the fry are gone, obviously.

I'll keep you posted on what happens.

Kat.
