I have a pair of breeding 2" convicts in a 10 gallon (yeah, I know it will be too small very soon). Their other tankmates have already been relocated to my other tanks due to their aggression. I have a 55 gallon with 9 african cichlids from 3"-6" (3 each: Nimbochromis venustus, Pseudotropheus socoloffi, electric yellow) and 6 bottom dwellers (3 algae eaters, 2 dojo loaches, and 1 pleco). When the convicts get bigger I plan to put them in the 55 gal tank. As small as they are, they are aggressive enough that I think I could put them in the 55 gal now and they would rule over the big guys.

Will the little guys be OK? Should I be concerned for my big guys?

I'd be concerned for your convicts. African cichlids should mainly stick with their own kind. They don't mix well with other cichlids.

mbuna (afircan malawi rock dwelling fish that you mentioned) do not mix with fish from other lakes/parts of the world. They would kill the convicts.
