| set up a breeding tank i turned my 20 gallon into a convict breeding tank last night, im very excited, they are the only fish in the tank with flower pot and its lightly planted, i wanted some slate but they were out of it, they will order some soon, during the summer they dont have as much stuff like that since they dont get really busy during fall and winter.
anyways im very excited, and i was wondering if there are any tips you guys want to share, i know that they breed very easy with little effort at all, but i would love some tips or pointers anyways |

| im really starting to enjoy cichlids, and this always will help me pay for food and fish related items, even if my LFS prices are higher it wont matter becuase im making money on the fry. they are maybe only 1.5 or 2in but they are for sure a breeding pair. |

| Awesome. Nothing is really needed if they pair you will get fry basically. But doing a water change with water of a different temp (Very small change not anything drastic) will sometimes trigger a reaction. |

| wow, so you are only spending 6 days to breed them??
are u using the fry for food(which i don't really approve), or selling them or just giving them for free? |

| im confused by what you mean, " so you are only spending 6 days to breed them" please re-phrase so i can answer it for you, um well it depends on the number of surviors, if it comes dont to it i might have to use some of them for food, but not many if any, i will trade them in to my lfs and get credit, which will help pay for food, supplies, fish etc. and also, just for the exprience its very cool to see the fish breed and take care fo the fry |

| Just wait till 4-5 days after they have hatched.Their will be a mass of lil' buggers and mom & dad will probly be trying to keep them in a ball with no luck. The parents with eventualy follow the fry swarm where ever they go and stir up the gravel for them.If you have flake food.Grind it up as fine as possible and grab a small pinch and put it right on top of the gravel in the middle of the fry swarm and watch em' go nutts. p.s. when you do that make sure your hands are clean(no soap residue or chemicals) and remember mom and dad are probly going to persuade you to remove your hand from near their babys!! |

| Congratulations! I guess you experienced the same kind of behavior at the beginning that I am. My female is "playing hard to get" as well. I think my LFS will give me credit once I give them the fry because they hardly ever have them in stock. Hopefully that's the case. Try to get some videos up!

| thats odd for them to hardly ever have them in stock, unles they feed the fry to there oscars RO somthing, nomraly they say they cant keep them out of stock. Petco by me is doing adoption programs, and one of there tanks have about 200 hunderd 1inch long convicts, NOOO LIEEE they sell them 5 for a buck, but i trusted the ones at my LFS MUCH more, but thats just an idea of how over stocked they could make someone. |

| I went to 4 Pet Stores trying to get a male Convict and the only store that had any Convicts was PetsMart. They only had a few. I never thought of selling the fry but if the pet stores do not have many Convicts maybe I could try to sell or trade some with them. Right now I am waiting for them to pair off. I only have one male but I have 3 females. I will have to move out two of the females when finally pair off. I hope that will be soon. I am looking forward to watching them breed. |

Nahacky's aquarium is in a really odd place though, and is kind of hard to find. Maybe there aren't that many local breeders around? I don't know.

| Awesome love this thread, I just bought 4 convicts today and can't wait for breeding process. Looking for any tips and pointers and anything in between. Gratz on the fry cody! First want to make sure I have right sexes, I'm horrible I know. The female red spots are larger and brighter so I'm pretty sure I got two males and two females. Are there any other indicators I can look for to make sure that's what I have? Also I have a hollowed out log that they love to swim in, but should I grab a flower pot or slate for them to put eggs in/on? Also since I have 4 if one pairs up should I get rid of the other two ASAP? My questions will keep rolling as quick as think of them, I will have a lot! Sorry but I like to know every step before it happens Oh what should I look for to tell if she is pregnant or not? |
