Convict breeding help
Hope someone can help me on this one. Have a pair of convicts they bred straight away and started looking after the fry just like everyone says. So far so good, then the male decided it is his job to look after the babies on his own. He swims around the tank with them and chases the female like crazy if she dares to come out of the rocks. This carries on for for about a week now there are no babies and him and his wife are friends again she has all her colour back and it looks like they are going to get another batch going in the cave. All this has happened in three weeks. Don't know whether to try seperating the fry after a week this time or what, anyone have any suggestions or similar experience. I have swortails in the tank as dither fish. I know everyone says you can't keep cons them with other fish but althought the cons chase the swords, from time to time there have been no serious problems. In fact some of the swordtails are pretty aggressive to each other anyway. I should add that this male killed his previous wife and all the other convicts I has a year ago. After that he lived alone till I could get him a new wife. I live in Thailand and I can't always get convicts here.

Welcome to fishlore!!!
My convicts did that only the female was the agressor....she killed her first mate also.....so I decided to get another female instead, but the LFS was a noob and gave me a male..which now she calmed down and then they both did their job raising the fry...I have tons of convicts and dont know what to do with them now LOL ..so maybe wishing for some isnt a good thing....goodluck with your bully!

i bought a "pair" of convicts about 3 hours ago and i have released them into their 60G tank.
the problem is, i think they're both males- they both have long fins but 1 is rounder than the other. which made me un-sure of there sexes.
now in the past half an hour they have both been under a piece of bogwood but they keep 'flaring' out their gills at each other and kind of ramming each other?
can some one pleae help me on this!

thought you said they have a slight orange on their bellies?
if so, they are fems..just take one back and get one without the orange
and just a lil tidbit, if they breed, they will kill anything in the tank with them and their babies ..of course unless they are in a huge tank with enough space for ALL other fish to stay on one side ..tough lil buggers they are

could you suggest any other cichlids that are quite easy to breed for me to try in my 60G tank instead of convicts?

shawnie, ive come to a conclusion , one of them is definitly a male because he has the longer fins and no colour apart from his stripes and a bit of blue on his fins, he also has that samll lump on his head , then, what i now belive is the female has small fins and has got a slight red-pink tint to her belly.
my conclusion, the fish got stressed and lost all their colour, because when i first put them in neither of them had hardly any full stripes, now they do.
and now shes only now gettin back her orange or red on her belly.
does this sound like it could be right to you?

ABSOLUTELY!
anytime convicts are stressed, their stripes dissapear and they almost look grey....im glad things are working better..

got up this mornin and turned on the light....
and found both of my convicts with their lips locked which clearly shows to me they're males, what i thort was an orange tint was just the way my light hit his gills, not happy.
