convict help please...

hello everyone,
im pretty new to convicts but i have done a fair amount of research and know that they can be intense breeders and all that stuff...i have two questions and a problem...is it possible for a female to lay her eggs and protect them without them being fertilized..and if they arent fertilized should i be worried about leaving them in the tank?....

...the main problem is that i bought two young convicts from a pet shop and i asked for a male and female but im not sure i got that..and now i have a female protecting eggs and im not sure if they have been fertilized

If they aren't fertilized they will die off on their own or get eaten. The mom guards the eggs like a hawk until they become wigglers. The mom seems to be the primary care giver...she & dad will bicker. Dad will guard the "cave" and mom will get food. If they feel threatened they will pick up the babies in the mouths (if you get to have fry) & move them to another spot. They are very cute to watch but get super aggressive and may kill or try to kill whatever else may be in the tank with them.
Good luck either way.

welcome slmon...if you have a female convict, she will have a lil bit of orange around her belly..and the male wont...they make great parents just watch out for other fish in the tank ...goodluck!
