It is SO hard to get the fish to smile!

I can't answer your question, because I am not a cichlid person, but what are the red spots on the middle picture? I know kribs have red on them when they are ready to breed, but...this doesn't look normal.

We have Cutteri, which is a cousin to convicts.

In the cutteri the males color up exactly like your center picture is colored up. The female cutteri get a yellow color where the males get the blueish. I couldn't see a good pic of both fish together, but I would bet that the one in the middle is a male, actually.

(I could be wrong, so if I were you I would wait for Carol (Butterfly), or Dino...(Dino) to come along and ensure the accuracy of what I posted.)

well..on fishlore's profile of a convict, it says the female gets a lil orange/red color near the belly...so thats why I thought the wider of the two, was preggo ...maybe im wrong which certainly wont be the first time here lol

after reading alot on these buggers..and noticing one did have orange on her belly and one didnt, I came home from work last nite, and noticed the female chasing the male pretty bad...so I thought maybe this was their ritual because they have gotten along so well forever, so i left them alone, and now I came home tonite to him on the bottom of the tank ... so guess we arent having babies...not really sure why hes gone, other than seeing her chasing him and maybe stressing him to death, I really dont know...grrrr

I swear mine has that same coloration in the mid section, I'll check closer tonight when I get home from work. Of course this means nothing except mine has the same color as yours lol. I thought they became problematic with more than 1 or is that just with different species?

of course when I got mine, and my uneducated LFS told me the two would be great together, ive read since then that convicts of opposite sex will work well together...of course they breed easily and are very territorial when they lay, but for some reason that didnt work for us...read on fishlore about the convicts..its very informational...all other information ive read on them means the orange coloring on the belly or underside means female...and the male doesnt have the orange...

That was the profile that introduced me to them. Im thinking she is a she, I'll stick with the 1 female for now since I have other mates in the tank. Eventually I'd like to upgrade to a 75 or 80 gallon, when I do that maybe I'll try breeding a pair in my 55G.
