Considering Cockatoos. What do I need to know

I'm setting up my first cichild tank. I've decided on two angels and a cockatoo trio. I've been told to get one male and two females.

Is their anything that I need to know about them? And how do you tell genders apart?

cockatoos

Apistogramma Cacatuoides is the Cockatoo dwarf. The male is fulltime beautiful fish... he has a large colorful tail, dorsal fin with extended rays and anal fin with good color if a triple red.. the females are smaller and not too colorful until spawning and then turn yellowish or even yellow.

They prefer neutral to acidic soft water but now from breeding can survive in most tanks...the young can be adapted to live out of the preferred range of soft, acidic ...but breeding and hatching usually requires the amazon water type tanks.

They love caves and hiding places, plants etc. Most colorful in low light areas and not bright white sand etc. for color display.

Hope this helps you...

oh yes, and they will be fine in a community tank...being cichlids will enjoy a few baby fish now and then. The only drawback is that they can be a bit aggressive when spawning and protecting the nest (like any cichlid). Having a trio is good too, so none of them picks on the other one particular fish.
