Clown loach ick!!!!

Please I need HELP!!! I have 4 clown loaches around 2 inches long and they have a horrible case of ick! I tried a medicine that was safe for them but when i took out my carbon filter all the that has built up flowed into the tank! so taking out my carbon filter is not an option! i have a 30 gallon tank and none of my other fish have caught ick except one of my synodontis cats. Any suggestions? right now i am raising my temperature to 85 and im going to add salt once that has happened.

Hello and Welcome!

I'm sorry about the ICH!

Remember to raise the temp gradually so you don't stress your fish. Keep the temp raised above 82 for about two weeks. I do not recommend salt; it can actually cause more harm than good, especially with loaches.

You may find this helpful: http://www.fishlore.com/aquariummaga...sh-disease.htm

Raising the temp is usually the best and safest solution (rather than meds). Have you considered what might have caused the outbreak? Increased gravel vac will help pcik up the ich spores and increased partial water changes should clean up the water. Have you checked your water params lately?

GL and let us know if you have more questions!

Hello Craig and Welcome to Fish Lore. So hate to hear that you're having ICH issues. Raise your temperature to 84 or 85 degrees. The salt is "not" necessary and I don't know how well the Clowns will react to salt! Leave your temperature there for 2 weeks. Add an air supply line and stone if you don't have one in there already. Warmer water needs more air. Vacuum twice each week to remove the spores that fall off the fish and into the substrate. ICH cannot survive or reproduce in temperatures over 82 degrees.
I only suggest medications for ICH in severe cases and as a last resort. Meds can destroy your cycle if you aren't careful.
Best wishes for you and your fish!

Like everyone has said, raise the heat slowly until it is over 82F, and just keep monitoring them and the other fish, but also do lots of water changes and clean out the substrate when you do the water change, it will help with getting rid of the ich.
OR
If you don't have any inverts in your tank, ones that you like, you could always get a 2" piece of copper pipe from the store, clean it really well, and add it to your filter, from experience, it works really well and I haven't had to raise the temperature in the tank for a long time and I also haven't seen any unwanted snails in the tank either. I found this out when my 36 had a really bad case of ich and I lost 90% of my tank. I was at a point of not really caring if it worked or not cause I tried everything else, so to my surprise, it worked really well and the fish have been fine and doing even better then before.

Hi, Welcome to fishLore!
Sorry you're having problems with ICH Loaches are notorious for getting ICH. The least stress or chill will cause an outbreak. The Loaches in your tank need to be at a constant 78-82f . Is your aquarium information correct? If so then you are really over stocked.
Do you know what your ammonia, Nitrites, and nitrate readings are.
I know the clowns and red fin blue botia are small but they will get huge. The elephantnose can get up to 9 inches. the S petricola will get 5 inches.
Here's some information on Clown Loaches-http://www.loaches.com/species-index/clown-loach-chromobotia-macracanthus
Here's some information on the red fin blue botia - http://www.loaches.com/species-index...20blue%20botia
Keep us posted on how their doing and if we can help in any way.
the treatments for iCH noted above are excellent except.......
I do respectfully disagree with putting copper pipe in the tank. The reason being you can't measure how much copper is leeching into the water and loaches don't always do well with copper.

Welcome to Fishlore!
Excellent advice above.
I'm with Butterfly on the copper thing. I'm not a fan of using copper or salt unless it's a last resort, as both have the potential to be harmful to fish.

Yea, I know my tank will be overstocked in the future, but right now all the fish are within 1-2 inches except for the elephant nose which is around 4 inches, and i also have a 20 gallon i switched some small fish into like the corys, but i'm only about 50 dollars away from getting a 90 gallon including the filter and lighting and planting and ornaments so I'm not so overstock, as of next week, the fish with growing potential will be transferred over to the 90 gallon. And 2 of my clown loaches died like a day after my post but all the ICH is gone now! Thanks for everything guys/girls!

Hello Craig. Sorry to hear you lost 2 of your clowns. I'm sure you and your fish will enjoy the new 90g tank. Keep us posted. I wouldn't recommend lowering your temperatures until the 2 weeks of high temps have been completed.
