Clown Loach Burrowing

So the lil bugger had me scared. I looked in my tank for him at feeding time, couldn't find him. Scared me nuts. Went looking all over the floor for him, looked back in the tank, back on the floor.

Then i see a lil tail wiggling around in my driftwood.

It is a tight squeeze though. Do they normally like to burrow like this? I don't wanna have him get stuck in there, can they swim backwards? I didn't want to move the wood because I might scare him and hurt him.

yeah, this is normal behavior for them.

they love to cram themselves into the smallest space possible, to the point where one of my 6'' clowns squeezes into a 5'' long pot with a 3cm opening - with 3 other loach, and they have also dived into my sand with only their tails sticking out.

Clown loaches are known for getting into the tightest places they can. They don't usually get stuck but I would keep an eye on him.
My husband(who was gone at the time) loves to tell the tale of how I hauled a huge piece of water logged driftwood out of a 75g tank, used a hammer and screw driver to chisel a clown I thought was stuck out of a tight fitting hole, then had to chase him all over the floor as he flopped around. The loach survived, hubby almost didn't
After a good friend finally quit laughing (he has a 21 yr old clown loach) he told me this was their habit and would probably have been fine.

same as

had to snap a peice of bogwood in half because 3 clowns decided to hide in there when i was doing a full water change and had to have the wood out of the water for a few hours. (**** their barbs!!)

i've had clowns hide in wood out of the water for an hour before, with no ill effect - but i thought 2-3 hours would be pushing it lol
