Did you know?

Did you ever wonder how fish get their name?

I have been researching clown loaches, as of late, and found out that the genus name Chromobotia is derived from the Greek word chromo meaning colour and botia a regional Asian native word meaning warrior or soldier - referring to the spine under each eye. The whole name means coloured warrior. The species name macracanthus comes from the Greek word macros meaning large and the Latin word acanthus meaning thorny - again on reference to their eye spines.

I also came across a another wierd tid-bit in my information search... native people in the regions that this fish is found find the larger fish a very tasty food!!

Most scientific names for animals, plants, drugs, bacteria, virus, etc., etc., etc., will usually be a description. A description of physical attributes or make up, or of behavious or effects.

Here's a non-scientific one:

CHOCOLATE

Did you know that the first EVER tax on chocolate was on a hot chocolate drink? It was taxed by the Aztecs and the tax was called.... XOCOLATL! Tada! Hence the modern name.

I still cant imagine eating one though. I guess because I picture this fish as a pet, not a food item, like say.... a tuna.

There are several of the fish sold for the aquarium trade that are used as food fishes in their native countries

Here's another tid-bit of trivia. Did you know that some dolphins are carrion eaters?

We often hear stories about dolphins saving peoples' lives while they were lost out at sea. We hear how these dolphins circled the victims making it easier to float and also warded off sharks. What nice little angles, right? WRONG! The circling does actually help you float, however, its so that their future lunch doesn't float away. When they fight off sharks, they are only protecting their future meal.
