200 gallon Pacu/Oscar tank

Having trouble keeping a 200 gallon tank with 3 large pacu and 4 medium size oscar clean. We have a Filstar 4, a Magnum 350 Bio-Pro canister filter and a magnum HOT micropolisher on it. We feed them pellets a couple of times a day. There is a piece of wood in the tank. We do 25 percent water changes weekly. Does anyone have any experience or advice? Thanks. Chelle

Cloudy Water 200 Gallon

Have a 200 gallon with 3 Pacu, 4 Oscar and 1 Pleco. We have a Rena Filstar 4, a Magnum 350 and a Magnum HOT micropolisher running on it. We do 25% water changes weekly, feed them pellets a couple of times a day. I stopped feeding them fruits and veggies because it made the tank even dirtier. There is only a piece of wood in the bottom of the tank (of course pea pebbles). Anyone have any suggestions of what might be going on? Anyone have big fish and good advice?

I should mention this is an established tank that has always been cloudy. When we had these guys in a 90 it was the same way. The water also tests fine.

Thanks.

Chelle

Your welcome, it does take a bit of getting used to.

Shawnie has Oscars as well as other members, I'm sure she'll be here soon to help you.

I can take an uneducated guess...there are so many large fish in the tank that you'll probably have to up your water changes to at least twice weekly and I'm not real sure even a 200g tank can handle the bio load.
I'm not sure about the compatabity of the oscar and the pacu.

Hi Chelle..welcome to fishlore!!

all the advice I can give is every other day of at least 25%-50% water changes...oscars and pacu's are messy fish as you know and thats the only way I keep my tank clean and prestine...you have plenty of filtration but its the vacuum and water changes that will keep it clean.oscar poo is huge and no other fish or pleco will eat that....otherwise give up some of your babies and I know thats almost impossible to do... I have 2- 12" mating pair of oscars in a 75 gal and thats how I keep them sparkling and happy...goodluck and can you share pics with us when you can?

Shawnie, thank you. My husband and I have 17 tanks and I can't seem to give up any of the fish. The Pacu and Oscar are really close to my heart with their wonderful personalities. I have three green terrors and the largest is kind of the same way. I'll get some photos and share them. The Pacus are about 13" and the Oscars about 9". We tried to separate them both both species got very depressed, so we bought the 200 and they're all in love again

Thank you again!

Chelle

I hear ya chelle....I was in the process of rehoming one of my oscars as I cant get another tank unless I buy a new house..then after 8 years, they laid thousands of eggs so now that I know they are a mating pair, I dont have the heart to get rid of them so every other day changes is what keeps them clean and happy..im willing to do that until the day comes my house expands or I move LOL ...cant wait to see pics

Shawnie, how did you make your gallery? I would love to do that. We have so many different types of fish, I'd love to share them. We keep buying tanks to accomodate babies and then when I see fish online that are cool, that prompts another tank. We just got a 150 so we could have some flowerhorns and jacks, red jewels, blue jewels, midas and texas cichlids. I have 3 beta tanks, a 55 full of guppies, several cichlid tanks, a 90 gallon fancy goldfish tank and several 75-90 tanks that we're raising babies in. It's a great hobby, along with the 3 dogs. What a pain it will be when we upgrade the 200 for the big guys

Please let me know about the gallery.

Thanks again.
