Green water!

Hi guy's and gals will here we go again. I have a newly aquierd 75gal tank have had it running for 3 months I use an API Master test kit and today's readings are ammonia .0 ,Nitrites .0 , and Nitrates are .10. I have 2 Emperoir 400 power filters on it just did a water change 2 days ago and the water is cloudy check out the pic. I just don't get it. water Temp. is 78deg FH and pH is around 6.6. My 29gal is crystal clear. It was cloudy before the water change it's never been clear. Any Ideas on how to clear it up?

Hi hop2jr,

Either your filter may not be bacteria matured or aquarium is overstocked.

see link: http://waterlife.co.uk/waterlife/tropical-guide.htm
(scroll down & look for GREEN WATER/CLOUDY WATER)

Keep up with the water change. I had to do mine every day for approx. a week when faced with the same problem.

Good Luck

LOVE your tank Decor....looking past the cloudy water

can't help you on that front, having the same issue in my goldy tank, but not quite as cloudy as yours, just a little bit after the last water change.

but everybody seems to be doing fine and the water parameters are good.

hopefully rick will do another water change for me this week to see if we can clear it up.

Hmm... several possibilities,,

1. Its a bacterial bloom.... but this doesnt seem too likely given your readings, unless you are overfeeding or not doing regular waste removal (water changes/gravel vacs)

2. Its overly filtered (ie. too much current) this can cause the debris that usually settles into the gravel to stay suspended in the water column... again not too likely because the filters should be removing this

3. Its from the gravel or decor... I see a lot of white gravel, rocks, and decor... the paint used on these could be flaking or dissolving into the water... this would probably be evident if the filter pads look like they are covered in white dust

4. The use of zeolite crystals in the filter can cause cloudy water... obviously if you dont use zeolite then this doesnt apply

Any of these things, and a few others that are less likely, could all cause white cloudy water... some tanks take what seems like forever to finally clear up, while others never even get cloudy.

One final thing... are you replacing the carbon filter pads frequently and or all at the same time? If so, then you may be stalling your cycle out and keeping the tank in a neverending mini-cycle.... take a look at this thread about filter maintenance and see if that could be the problem =)

Thanks for the info clinton. I started feeding the fish every other day. Had to leave for 3 days when I came back the water was twice as cloudy. I did a 50% water change today and rinsed the filter pads in the fish water I took out. Going to add more gravel/sand to tank I only have about 1" right now going to make it 2" and see what happends. I'll let ya know.

AYYYYY! Now its green I think the last owner had an algie problem the tank was in a Flordia room full of windows. It was clean when I set it up but now water looks like pea soup. I only have 64 watts of light which is less than 1watt/gal. Any ideas on how to get rid of it without spending much $? HELP! I did turn the lights off and put a blanket over the tank to keep light out is there anything else?
