Water Changes

The Current Fish:
1 Green Cory
1 Albino Cory
3 Neon Tetras
2 Zebra Danio
1 Golden Zebra Danio
1 Upside Down Catfish

I clean my gravel/change water twice a week filling a 3 1/2 gallon bucket I'm currently using Aqueon conditioner it was on sale and my fish seem to like it.
I do 35% on Wed and 35% on Sat.
So i do a total of 70% water change each week is that too much?

Hi Metal.

IMO, I would say doing 70% water change a week is ok. Probably too much for a 10 gallon. Wait for more opinions from other members.

You could skip one of your bi-weekly changes and test the water twice a day. If you're able to get to your next water change for that week without any problems on your water params, then you'll know you can do once/week. (Though I suggest doing 2 buckets if you find that you can do once/week changes.) Keep an eye on the params for the first couple weeks if you switch to 1/week pwc.

I change about 40% once a week in my smaller tanks (ie. everything but my 55g), but that's no guarantee it will work for you. I used the aforementioned method to determine how often I should change their water. Others may have better ideas based on your stock.

Hello MetalFish. Personally I think your fish would be fine with 35% change a week. Keep an eye on your readings for your cycle to be sure.

I agree here.

I agree with testing water parameters. I'd advise testing daily for two weeks, making sure you do the nitrate test once a week to see what your tank actually needs for a water change.

I base my water changes on my nitrate levels unless I have an ammonia spike or mini-cycle going on, which doesn't happen too often. Some of my lower-stocked tanks have started getting water changes bi-weekly so I don't send them into a mini-cycle by removing all of the nitrates.

I am going to do one full bucket on Wednesday (3,1/2gal) and half a bucket on Saturday.
About 5 gallons of water will be changed a week, I will test regularly.

That sounds like a good place to start. You can always work your way down to once per week if the params allow it and you feel comfortable doing so. Best wishes to the fishes!
