algae scrapers

hello all

i've decided to buy an algae scraper for my tanks to make things easier on me. I just recently bought a nice "aquarium tong" thingy that detaches and u can also use it to trim plants and its awesome!

forever i've told myself i'm not wasting money on something that i can use a credit card for...but i've decided i'm just going to do it lol. it'll keep my tanks looking nicer cuz i find myself not wanting to get my arm wet up to my shoulders everytime to scrape algae. A very similar situation as to what made me buy the tongs. Its just convenient

ANYWAYS, I'm thinking about the kent scraper shown in this link http://www.petmountain.com/product/a...aper-long.html

I was wondering if anyone from their own personal experience would suggest the metal scraper or the plastic scraper, or do they both work equally well? whats the advantages/disadvantages of not getting the metal scraper? I would think it'd scratch your glass?

also interested if anyone has one they dont use or willing to get rid of?

Hello enthusiast. I've never used the metal scraper. I tend to shy away from metal on glass. I just use the cheap, rough type sponge on a long handle design. I'm sure you'll get some more responses.

I use a Mag-float. I havent tried a metal scraper either.
The Mag float is nice because if the magnet comes apart the part in the water just floats. It also works great at least on the stuff I get.

I use a papertowel.
Also, I have been too cheap to buy the plant trimmer but I think I am finally going to bite the bullet and get one.

I bought one and find it useless. They are just to hard to get where you want to trim without cutting the stuff you dont want. I use a pair of stainless scissors and it works tons better. It might be another story if you were to buy a pair of ADA long handles scissors but the cheap Foster and Smith sets just arent worth it. The grabbers dont work well either.

I use an ordinary small sponge with scourer on one side and sponge on the other. Works a treat and dnt scratch the glass. there are loads of options it just depends on what suits you.

I have the mag float, some of the algae just wont come off with those things, and with 2- 75 gal tanks, its just a hassle to get on those back walls

beth- i just bought a thing for the plant trimmings, i can say i love it and its saved me a ton of time. i got mine from dr foster and smith website, it bends at the middle to easily store away and the attachment comes as a gripper or a small trimmer. I'd suggest one

due to how much the plant trimmer has helped me its LED me to look for one of these algae scrapers, as it would solve alot of the hassle and be easier

petco has a multi tool scraper very similar to the one linked in the OP, but petco has theres for about $12. i bought the plant trimmer kit and a cheap algae scrubber from petco last saturday and i love them! the plant kit at petco is identical to the one drs foster and smith has but its much cheaper from petco.
