Diatoms problem

I've had my aquarium cycled for 9 months now, in all that time have had pretty bad diatoms covering everything in the tank. I clean the tank weekly, wipe most of it off pretty easily but it ends up just making the water cloudy then sinks back to the gravel after I've changed the water. Within 2 days it has started growing all over everything again.

I did have live plants but had to throw them away because they were just covered in it and the leaves were all dying, have plastic plants at the moment as they're much easier to clean.

My ammonia levels are always 0 when I test, as are my nitrites, between 10-20 nitrates. The pH is about 8. I have 8 neon tetras, 30 litre tank.

I've read that it occurs in new tank setups, but seeing as it's been 9 months now was wondering how much longer I could be stuck with it, it looks horrible with white gravel!

Any advice is much appreciated, thank you :-)

it starts off in new tanks but can last a year or more...i still have some in my tanks ...its more of an eye sore and usually wont hurt much...my white gravel in my african tank has it too..and i gave up and just let it be part of the process LOL ....other than time, change the gravel color? ottos love it but not if your tank is stocked....filling in your aquarium information will help a ton !!!!!!
