Cannister filter maintenance

I have a Fluval 605 cannister. Each time after I clean it out I have the same problem. After I reassemble everything and power the filter back on it pumps tons of detrius back into the tank for the first few seconds. I have tried catching the initial flow in a bucket, etc but it is a very difficult juggling act. Does anybody have any suggestions for this?

Hello Ballison. I think this is a pretty common problem with every filter. At least every filter that I have ever owned. I stopped trying to fight it. It all filters out or gets sucked up the gravel vacuum. Personally I wouldn't stress over it.

mine does that too, but it sucks it back up after awhile.

I think we all have that problem. It seems like 30 minutes to an hour afterwards it has cleared itself back up. Just one of the things we have to deal with for a little while.

My Eheim doesn't do that, unless the hoses are dirty...I use a brush cleaner attached to a long bendable wire (Lee's, around $5) to clean them once a month. No more gunk

When i clean my filters i take the inlet/outlet tubes off of the intake and spray bars and clean it all out. I don't know how you clean yours - but i break my down and get at all the parts and then connect the tubing and force water through - all that crud comes out on the concrete.

Had the same problem. It was always white debris coming out so I thought it was from not properly rinsing new foam inserts. I rinsed new ones more vigorously and it cut back on it a little but some still came out. It was frustrating.

I recently gradually switched from a Fluval 305 to a combo Aquaclear 70 and Aquaclear 50 HOB filters which let me still customize inserts or make my own. The Fluval worked great but the maintenance wasn't my cup of tea.
