Using Silicon to patch production(active) tank with fishes inside

Hi All,

I was thinking of patching the top part of my tank. Siphon out water until half filled, Put in Silicon and wait for a few hours before i top back the water.

All these while with the fishes in... is it ok? I got the aquarium silicon "Nirox clear sealent"...

Will it be safe for fish?

Regards,
Anthony

usually it has to sit for a few days to cure so check the directions...

like shawnie said, it usually needs to be dry for at least 24 hours. once it's completely cured, you can bring the water level up again. depending on tank size and inhabitants, you might be able to go with the lower water level for a day or two while patching?

as for whether it's safe, check the label. is there anything in it other than silicone? if so, it's probably not safe.

i would not do it because if the thing takes more than 24hours than it would be bad for the filter. if it is a canister than ok

It'll be fine as long as you don't top up the tank before the sealant has cured. Give it at least 24hrs.

that's another good thing to consider. if you're going to do it, make sure that your filter intake is completely underwater the whole time.

My only concern would be that the humidity from the water in the tank would keep the silicone from curing and firming up properly.

glad we could help you

maybe leaving the tank lid open would help with the humidity? i don't think the fish would be able to jump out with just a half tank of water?

your safest bet on the silicone is to buy aquarium specific silicone, pretty cheap at lowes
