Hi there, I've been visiting this site for quite sometime and decided to join the forums today.

I've been having this problem for quite sometime. Most of my plants and ornaments start to get coated with a black substance that just totally ruins the appearance of the tank

I do have black gravel, I don't think it is that though. Could it be the water quality? I never used to change it (I'd wait till it would evaporate and then add new water)...however after reading through a lot of articles I'm going to start performing water changes regularly.

What do you think the black substance could be? I was also thinking algae but it seems to dark to be algae.

Can you put a picture up for us? If it is black to green algae I had it in one of my tanks before but I can't remember what causes it. Is it black spots or is it fuzzy black? Look at the link above and see if that helps. Good luck. I hope this helps.
