It will definitely depend on what kind of fish you are looking to keep in your aquarium. that will impact the size and style of filter that would suite you best, what to set your heater too, what chemicals to dose, if any, etc etc.

what kind of fish are you looking at buying?

Hi

Please consider cycling with out fish. It's less work for you and less stress for your fish. They will not be subjected to the effects of toxic ammonia and nitrites.
If you cycle with fish you'll have to do daily water changes until the tank is cycled. This can take several weeks.
Cycling fish less is almost like set it and forget it. Just add a source of ammonia daily until the tank cycles.

You can cycle with ammonia:

or adding a pinch of fish food everyday or using a peice of raw shrimp.

You'll need a good test kit. Many of us use the API master kit. It's very reliable. Avoid the strips. They're not very accurate and are more costly in the long run.

Have patience and good luck
