Why is my filter media starting to float?

I heard a knock come from my tank last night so I got up and checked it out. The filter media floated up and knocked the top off the filter. I tried unplugging it and pushing the media back down along with the plastic cradle and it just won't stay down.

I have a aqua clear filter.

that happens to me too with my Aqua Clear filters. I use a rock on top of the filter box to keep the lid down. I have noticed at times when I do not have enough media in the box, it tends to slide up to the surface. If you get another sponge and stuff it down there, its possible then it will stay in place. Making sure that the lid is securely on, as it has that little tab the ends sit in. It drives me crazy sometimes just trying to get the lid back on right. Thats when the rock comes in handy lol...

I have found in my tank (HOB) that when the media begins to float up is when its time to swish the sponge through a bucket of tank water. Too much stuff is clogging the pores of the sponge to allow the water to filter up through the sponge and out of the box. It lifts the whole thing until it pushes the top off the box. I also place a back of ceramic noodles on top of the sponge filter to add to bio surface.

I thank you also Jess for the tip! Now I know why my own sponges were starting to 'float' as well.
