| Rut Oh, I swallowed green water!
well, yall who know me, know i'm not so good at the tank maintinence, Hubby usually takes care of that.
But he's been busy with work and i had the day off, and my divided betta tanks were green with string algae and needed to be cleaned and vacuumed and treated.
he just taught me how to use the siphon a couple of weeks ago when i re-did Lemon's tank at the store.
well the bookshelf tanks are HIGHER on the shelf and i had a hard time getting the siphon going and several times got a mouthful of green water
i'm kinda worried, cuz i only have a 6ft small intestine, versus a normal 30ft one (long story) and i have very little ability to fight off tummy bacteria.
i don't think i swallowed much, and i rinsed out my mouth after....but i hope i don't get sick!
anybody have any info on this?
and BTW, i started using a new algae contoller on Lemon's tank at the store, Tetra algae control, for use with plants and fish. Doesn't eliminate, but slows the development greatly for those sun exposed tanks.
i got it at wal mart. |

| instead of sucking the hose its easier to fill the hose with tap water before putting it in the tank which will automatily start sucking up the water, easier than sucking on it, and getting a mouthfull. |

| Hey Jacq I hope you are okay. That sounds so icky! Honestly, I couldn't stand the thought on starting the siphon that way, so I got a pithon. Its a little pricey, but its worth not having to suck on the end of the siphon, lol. |

| Don't worry I don't think you'll get sick out of Nitrates overdose, bacteria, algae and whatever lives in our tanks from a bit of green water. I would be already dead by now.
There's a thread on drinking tank's water somewhere in Fishlore... I laughed a lot with it, if this were dangerous, we would probably had some reports about it. Never heard of someone getting sick out of a sip of water from a tank that undergoes regular maintenance. It's not that easy to cross the interspecies barrier so we are quite safe with most (not all: e.g. Humans getting TB out aquariums is rare but has been reported) potential pathogenic agents in our tanks.

| I always use my thumb as a valve on the bottom of my syphon when starting it up. I fill the large part with water....hold it up and let the air run out of the bottom of the tube, then cover it with my thumb again so the water fills the entire tube, and there is no air in the large part. Then I stick the large part in the gravel, the small part in the bucket, and release my thumb. It starts right away. I would never put my mouth on the tube...blech! |

| Heheh i did that once when my python vac had a broken adapter. I think i gagged and almost puked. I know it was harmless but the thought of what was in that water LOL. LEts jsut say the 7 dollar replacement part i kept putting off was bought the next day with no problems. That is when i recommend a python gravel vac. |

| Alright I've showed her over an over how easy it is.............The hose we use on the small tanks is small and one little puff and it starts............ Besides even if you get water in your month doesn't mean you have to swallow it. |
