Help! How do I clean fogged glass?

I need help trying to figure out how to clean fogged aquarium glass!

I received a free 40 gallon half-hexagonal fish tank complete set up, from a lady on Freecycle. It is totally emptied out right now and dry. It has bad hard water deposits (or so I thought it was hard water deposits) all over the interior glass, so I attempted to use various methods to clean, such as vinegar, lemon juice, and even pH DOWN (which is what the guy at Petco recommended.) Problem is, nothing works!

The glass is very smooth to the touch, (only etched near the bottom where the gravel was,) and it has more of a fogged appearance. Is there anything I can use to get rid of the fogginess? And what could be causing this? Over time can hard water deposits actually fog the glass to the point there is no recovery possible? I really want to get this tank up and running, and be able to see the fishies! HELP!

With my spare tank, I had cleaned it after taking over but there were still some stuff on the glass that I simply could not clean out. Anyways, I decided to fill it up with water. Can't see the stuff on the glass after that. The aquarium glass is very clear now.

Someone just told me to cut a lemon in half and rub the juice end all over the glass. And guess what? It worked! Wish I had known sooner, as I have a lemon tree in my backyard, and could have saved $20 in chemicals. The tank will need another application, but I can already see where it cut thru the crud the first time.

It will fade after time. By the time you cycle the tank it should be cleared up. At least for our experiences with water stained tanks.
