Did my first gravel vac yesterday!

So my tank has been established for about 3 weeks and I had yet to complete a gravel vacuum. I guess it was because the water and everything looked so clear and my fish seemed to be happy.
Anyway, I decided that if I was going to keep my fish happy and healthy I needed to do this.

All I can say is WOW!!!! I was surprised at the amount of junk that was being sucked up. It really does settle it self down in the gravel! My fish were a little freaked out, but they got over it!

It only took about 30 minutes so that wasn't too bad either!

It's crazy all the things that end up there! some fishies are way messier than others...

It's perfectly healthy to have "some" debris in the substrate. Over-cleaning can trigger a mini-cycle since some important bacterial colonies live there. I do half and half in substrate vacuum (per week) and intentionally skip it when rinsing sponge media (which I don't do too often).
