At the risk of sounding like a numptey I am having problems using my vacuum hose. I have never vacummed before but bought one the other day and am trying it today. However when as instructed hovering it about 10cm above the gravel and then moving it up and down sereral times nothing happens, what am I doing wrong?


On another note, I can't find my female gbr, I am trying not to fear the worse but not looking good :-(

When I first got the vacuum, I had a hard time as well. Over time I learned how to use it. When my daughter bought a Betta fish tank she also wanted to know how to use the vacuum so one day when she was visiting I showed her how to use it. So I ended up making a video on the 1 2 3 easy way...
You can check it out below in the link. I also tried vacuuming the way the instructions on the vacuum said, but had a tidal wave going on in the tank.. and I thought that just was not going to do! lol..

Thanks Kate, have checked outthe vid and now know where I was going wrong! lol Bit different to what it say's on the box!!

I cleaned my tank just using the hose and found the female gbr unfortunately dead, feel gutted my male is looking so lost

Glad to hear the video helped. Im sorry about your GBR tho. I also love these fish and have had a few of them over time. I just lost my female a few days ago myself. I know what you mean about the male feeling so lonely now.
GBRs are pretty sensitive fish. Have you tried to keep Bolivian Rams? I have two that are doing great, a lot like the GBRs in personality but a much more hardier fish to keep.

Not tried the bolivian ram's Kate, i'll look up on them. From what I can recall I can't remember seeing them in any of the stores around me

Nice...this is so helpful! thanks for the video capekate! I've never used my siphon yet. It doesn't look so intimidating now. Sorry to hear about your fish sallers.

Seriously, it took me forever to figure out how to use one of those darn things the first time... I made a total mess of water all over the place (and myself), kicked up a lot of garbage in the tanks, and scared the peewodden out of my fish in the process. Sure wish I'd known about this video back then!!

So sorry about your girl. Hope you can get another for the lone fellow. Those fish are not easy to find down here.

Thanks to that video I stopped, after years end -and I had a 20 years hiatus- the eventually-unavoidable yet-involuntary drinking of my tank's water.
