Water changes

When doing water changes do you leave the heater off for 20-30 min after new water has been added? Also do you leave the filters on during the change? I thought about this doing a 20% change last night.

when I do mine, and gosh knows ive done enough to last a life time, I dont go below the intake valve of my filter..so no on turning off the filter..as far as the heater, I do unplug it and leave it unplugged until I refill ...I had a full tank with fish uncycled so ive done many changes daily ...

I don't unplug my heaters, but my heaters are all at the bottom of the tanks, so they are never exposed.

I unplug everthing. I don't like sticking my hands in water with anything plugged in.

I think I'm an electric magnet, I've been indirectly struck by lightening twice, friends keep their distance from me during storms, and once I got shocked by my dog's shock collar. (which I will never use on a dog again, my teeth were numb for 2 days)

I'm the same way with electricity, but I force myself to do water changes with stuff plugged in. If I'm not willing to risk it myself, I can't make my fish risk it.

Lucy, you'd be terrified of my dad. We were rewiring a couple of things in my house, and I asked him "Shouldn't we turn the circuit breaker off, or at least turn the light switch off?" His response was "Probably" as he kept working.
He once told me to touch a speaker wire just to see if it was live (it was). I hate getting shocked.

I, too, am amused by the numb teeth reference.

Only because my dad suggested it.

This kind of thing apparently runs in both sides of my family. My great-grandpa used to tell my mom that the electric fence was off, and he would grab it to prove it to her. Of course, it wasn't. I guess she and her sisters fell for this more than once.

Last time I said probably I arced 120 to ground, ooops lol I havnt done it personally but I can tell you 208 makes a much bigger spark.

WOW numb teeth from a dog collar? that is quite the picture

I'll start leaving the filters on and just close the mid range intake during changes. I'm having to them daily right now to get my nitrite levels back down to an acceptable level. After 11 gallons last night I decided I am buying the python regardless of cost it was just too haard getting up this morning for work after a 9pm 20% change.

All the heaters always say they work better if verticle is this actually true or can I just drop them into the tank w/o any issue's?

If you have the HOB heaters (they've got a little clip that holds them to the back), they cannot be submerged. If you have a submersible heater (usually have suction cups along the back. The packaging will clearly state that it is submersible. If it doesn't, don't try it), they work better if they are horizontal or angled, because they create a current of warm, rising water that evenly mixes warm water with cold.

My husband says that all the time!

I can see benefit of leaving the filter plugged in and not losing the suction. Any stuff in the tube flows back into the tank.

While doing my at present 20% daily I found that I cannot leave the filter's on past about 10%. The mid level intakes on my penguins allow air in once they are no longer fully submerged(Yeah I probably should have seen that one coming from the moon).
