Re: what is this

Those are Monos. They are brackish fish. They need a mix of salt water and fresh water. They also get to be about 9" long and need a big tank. If I missed anything else, someone else should be able to help you even further. Their are great looking fish.

Re: what is this!!!

Are you sure those are monos? the link to thefish ID that was posted shows only two bars on them at the head area and none at the back end like in the photo from Anna's fish which has three bars and no yellow/gold tint. When I first saw the photo from Anna it looked just like a type of tetra that I saw at my LFS last week that I was interested in. Wish I can remember the name of it at this time but will look for it when I go back this week.
Anna,
Do you remember what the size of the adult fish you have there will be? Do you remember if the name of the fish began with a "s"? When I first saw this particular fish at the LFS I thought it was a miniature angel fish. It does look exactly like the one that I saw...
~ kate
ps the tail fin on Annas fish is shaped differently as well.

Hi Carol...
that is the name of the fish!!! It was a 'sebae' at the LFS. But they called it a Sebae tetra... hmmmm. and the photo in your link shows the one that I saw. So it looks like that is the fish that Anna has after all!

thanks ~ kate

Re: what is this!!!

Always welcome Tetras will almost always have a tiny little adipose fin between the dorsal fin and the caudal fin.

ahmmm.. a brackish fish, means that it likes brackish water Your fish ID was posted by butterfly in an above post. Tom referred to the MONO fish which is what your fish is, but there are two different species of the Mono fish. Butterfly shows your fish with photo in her post, check it out!

Hi Anna,
this link will help you to identify your fish. and you can read up on it. Its called a Sebae Mono ( Monodactylus Sebae). Brackish is a term used to identify a water condition, not a name of a fish. Both Tom and Butterfly identified the fish for you and the two different species of Mono fish.

Re: what is this!!!

Most people will recognize the name Mono somewhat. But you do realize it needs some salt in it's water to achieve a "brackish" water condition. Your other fish are not brackish especially the sucker fish. They may live well together for a time but the monos may sicken after a bit because the water conditions are not what they need.
Here is the definition of brackish from our dictionary. You'll have to scroll down a bit.
