what are the smaller/easier cichlids?

another attack of MTS is hitting me, all the classic signs, looking at filters, heaters, tanks, fish, and an empty looking- or "soon to be empty" spot to place a tank! putting the signs away, i already have those things!!(hard to resist MTS when you have everything..) that is if i can place them in my other 55- if not i can get a 75 with what ive got and get a "good" light later.

anywho i was wanting to know what are "easy" to care for cichlids as i don't wan't to go off getting a cool looking fish, having it turn out to be a big brutal demanding fish.

can any one give me a list of small beginner cichlids for me, along with max size aggresive levels and what lake/area it comes from.
and one more thing(meh) ive read some places saying "cichlid lights" do they require/prefer a certain light 'quality'.

hmm no particular region that i had in mind just wanting to know if i get one to keep with that region, i like suggestions i could never decide....the only fish in my tanks i have now that didn't take me an hour to decide on were my angels and guppy(breeders).

P.S info check aren't the ones from Africa more aggressive?

all cichlids can be agressive..some more than others..africans can be a species only ..which means only other africans...some of the SA, CA, NW cichlids can be mixed..depending on tank size and species ....

im leaning towards south American cichlids....

EDIT:i went found an LFS not far away that has tons of cichlid!! they had like 4 different colors of rams, since they are all rams- just different colors it should be okay to keep them together?

Alright, I will give a vote to the Africans, Sorry Amanda. I also agree that just about any Cichlid you decide on will see some aggression in their life time, for the beginner, Africans would be best enjoyed staying with the same lake. I have often thought of Rams myself though. You have a tough choice on your hands, which I am sure we are all familiar with. good luck, let us know what you've decided.

Go with rams. You have to keep the water very clean but they stay small and are very colorful.

On that size tank I vote to go with Bolivian Rams.

The regular Rams will do ok, but you should have a well established tank first.
Yes you can mix all the different color morphs of regular rams.....just don't tell some breeder that has spent his/her whole life trying to get that color!!!...lol

Bolivians are a bit tougher and very pretty in their own right.
