with that size tank, a nice school of 8-10 or so tiger barbs and a rainbow or red tailed shark would be saweeeet! add some plants and it would be a fun tank

If you want cichlids I'd recommend starting with a group of 4-5, then swap off the extras after a pair forms. The smaller species of South or Central American fish would be best, some are fairly easygoing (relatively speaking) and can be mixed with a group of tiger barbs or other fish. In any case, not more than one pair or a single male for that size tank. Most species will claim at least 2' of territory, over half the tank.

don't think i'd be able to swap off any of them... hmm really did want cichlids as well. what about one pair of small cichlids, 6 tiger barbs and a red tailed shark. That stocked or still room? Also i do breed feeder guppys (in a very well conditioned tank) which i sell to a local oscar fish club. I could use some of my stock for feeding, will these smaller cichlids eat feeders, i know the tigers wont.

if you want the tiger barbs, you really dont have room for another set of cichlid that will tolerate a small space as a 30 or 35g....especially if you get a breeding pair of anything..what type of cichlids are you looking to get? ever seen firemouths? they are awesome ...but if your barbs arent in a larger school than 6, you will probably have some nipping issues but with a larger school of barbs, you dont have allot of room to play with..so either no barbs, or a bigger tank maybe? thats just my opinion
