New Arrivals!

I had a special delivery a little while ago. We just welcomed two of CHoffman's red jewel cichlids into our home. I'll post pics once they're totally at ease with their new environment

Thanks again, Cesch! I LOVE them and I'm so happy to have them as part of our family

Thanks, everyone!

And on a "not as exciting, but still cool", note, we have two platy fry born last week and I think around 10 guppy fry born this morning that will be added to the princess's aquarium in a few weeks to a month to help her re-stock her aquarium that went wonky last weekend.

LOL..Yes they are fish..lol...As far as sex no I don't know what they are..With jewels you can't know for sure until they spawn..The females are usually smaller and brighter colored though.

I have heard a few say you can't know for sure till they spawn but i disagree.I have jewels that have spawned many times and they can be sexed very accurately long before they spawn. The females very rarely get the red that the males get and do stay smaller. The males will develope the blue sparkles all over and the females will have way less. The color , markings on the tails will look different also. They will have a darker line around the very edge of the tail and on the female it will run around only the top half of the tail and fade about halfway .The male will have this darker line but it will run the whole way around the edge of the tail.I've found the tail to be the biggest help sexing them till they spawn.

Venting would be even more accurate than that.

I'll rephrase that...I can't tell what sex they are..I know a couple that are def males just because I've raised them and they are bigger and more aggressive but as fat as telling them apart by their fins..Nope I can't do it..I know it can be done but not by me..lol...

Hi Steve, well actaully there are a lot of cichlid owners here, and they know about venting,(lol) to determine sex of their fish. And keen eye betta owners have been finding the little ovid spot for some time too.

The only problems with the cichlids is try and keep them still enough to look. But the regular practice is netting them, turning them over and look if one really has to know. I like the observation way best, as you stated, fin shape, color, and body shape. Seems less invasive, although not 100%

Thanks, guys! Once the "princess" saw them, she decided her 55 that went wonky last weekend is going to re-stocked with jewels and other cichlids I'm so proud.

I'm still waiting for pics.
Do you think a pair would do well with my Oscars in my 150?

I got some pics last night, but I need to see how clear they are and get them posted.

Well, I know jewels can hold their own, mine have put my JD, 3 cons, and an RTS in their place.

Double check this for sure, but I would think yes. Jewels get up to 5.5". I would think they'd be too big for the oscars to eat.

Post those pics BB..lol..Just teasing..
Amanda, Nickgoody kept a jewel with his oscar cons and some other fish (can't remember) in his 90gallon. I would think as long as there's lots of hiding places for the jewels it would be ok..They have BIG attitudes so really you would have no problem, in that department. they are brave and have no fear. My breeding pair weren't 5.5" they were smaller but I'm really REALLY bad at size so maybe SWilkins can give you a better guesstamite on how big the average size is. My husband put 3 little babies (newest batch) in with my 5 JD's, 2 Rainbows and 2 Angles thinking that the JD's would eat them but nope those babies are fat and sassy and running the show..lol..When they get bigger I'll have to take them out but for now it's hilarious to watch.

Here are pics of our new baby jewels! It took forever for me to get good pics. They have fun dominating the tank I'm still working on names: I'm thinking one will be named ruby, but I'm having trouble naming the other.

The 2nd picture also has George my JD in it and one of the very colorful young con females I got from SWilkins
