145 gallons? Wow!

What type of cichlids are you wanting to stock with? African or South American? Do you have any specific species in mind? If you do, we can advise on stocking from there.

Malawi's have to be overstocked to reduce aggression.

Hopefully my math isn't too far off when I say between 30-40. I'm sure another member will be along shortly to verify this.

Have you figured out specifically what type of malawi's? Semi-aggressive, aggressive, etc. Most can be kept together, but not all, so research is important on specific species compatibility.

Hope this helps.

Be careful....I have found that Africans are very addicting...oh wait most fish I found are very addicting....hummm....seems like I have a pattern going here. Keep us posted as to what you decide.

I would say BB is close with 30-40, that wouldn't be a bad number. Someone with more experience could probably get away with double that however I wouldn't recommend it for your first African tank.

With a 145gal tank, just to give some ideas, you could do an awesome Madagascar cichlid tank. Some very cool cichlids come from here. The king if you ask me would be Paretroplus Menarambo, it will give any salt water fish a run for its money with its amazing colors!!!
There is also Paratilapia species
A Ptychochromis species if you could find them, I know they have been breed in home aqua and I believe most of these species are endangered in the wild if not extinct.
Paretroplus Nourissati are just AWESOME, as with most Paretroplus species.

Good luck with the new tank.
