What is this cichlid??

This is Cachy, the african cichlid. I got him/her from my brother's girlfriend, as she was going to college. I know it's an african cichlid, but can anyone identify the specific species of cichlid? and if possible its gender too? Thanks.

i'm no expert on cichlids but i'm 99.99% sure it's a electric yellow cichlid. i think these guys are a lake malawi cichlid. what else is in the tank? or is he/she by him/her self? how big is the tank also? and what is the temp? and the pH?

i'm quite sure these guys like waters of about 80 F (28F) and a pH of 7 - 8.5. they are quite aggressive is what i read. they need a tank of at least 29 gallon.

you'll have to double check on this guys water requirements because, like i said before, i'm not the cichlid expert.

good luck.

Definitely not an electric yellow. The color and markings are off, and the shape of the head is quite different. I'll Google and see what I can find out. I wish I had the Ad Konings book, the Malawi one.

I am 100% sure its not a lab or zebra.
There is a lot to id-ing fish. You look at their fins, shape, size color. Their face structure, etc. Labs have a pointy face compared to this cichlid, its for the type of food they eat in the wild.
This fish looks exactly like one that I have before it turned its true adult colors.
Its a psuedotrophus elongatus "brown".

The brown will get darker. Unless its a female.

The id is in the Ad Konings malawi cichids in their natural habitat 4th edition, and cichlid-forums profiles.

I didn't see pseudotropheus elongatus "brown" on cichlid forum. I did see a couple of elongatus varieties that resembled this fish, but no wonder I couldn't ID it.

Jeeeeez, there are so many fish-related books I would like to have.

I have become embarassingly so facinated with Malawi Cichlids and West African Cichlids we have bought any book we could find on them. My Ad Konings book looks like its been through a tornado where I have read it over and over again, packed it everywhere.
He is going to be at the Cincinati ACA Convention at the end of July, if I wasn't getting ready to pop a baby out I would be there. I am still pullling the whinny routine where I hope my husband will give in and take me, at least for Konings workshops.

if it helps, this fish is around 7 years old, so it's an adult.
