Borelli Cichlid?

I went to a petstore that sells only a few fish in the next town over this morning, and they had Borelli Cichlids. I've NEVER seen these for sale anywhere over here before, so I bought a Male and Female. I think that they are some sort of Apisto/Cockatoo Cichlid, perhaps someone could comfirm this?

Yes you are correct, they are apistos They are darling little fish and I really think you will enjoy your pair. I kept them a while back. Here is a link with some good info on them. Congrats on your little guys!

Thanks Kate. I didn't have a chance to research as I had no idea they'd be there! Over here if a chance comes up to get certain types of fish you just have to take it! I've put them in the community tank with the Kribs, Corys and Livebearers. They are quite small, and the Kribs have just spawned so I'm keeping an eye on them! The tank is quite large though, and there are lots of plants and hiding places, so hopefully they'll be fine.

Sounds like they should do fine with those tankmates. Good luck with them Nick! Keep us posted on how they are doing and when you get around to it, don't forget pics

I'll get a pic once they're settled in. They should be fine as long as they stay away from the Kribs cave. One of the Corys tried to go in there last night and learned the hard way why he shouldn't!

Heres a couple of pics. I'm fairly sure I have a male and female, as the dorsal fin is quite different, one is long and pointed at the end, the other rounded.

Great pick up Nick! Would be cool if they spawned.
Saw some Double red Dwarf Cockatoo the other day at the LFS. Hubby practically had to drag me out of there LOL

They are so cute! The one on the left deffinetly looks like a male to me. The one on the right looks like a female. The male will grow to be larger than the female and their coloration will also be different. The male will become very vibrant while the female will stay more grey.

Generally true, but if you can get them to spawn the female will become quite vibrant during that time. I used to have a pair of apistogramma steindachneri and I'd start looking for eggs whenever I'd see the female turn bright yellow. The markings and patterns on her body changed completely as well- really fascinating to watch.

To the OP: what size is this tank? I'm thinking you might have some aggression problems with the borellis and the kribs. Hopefully you won't.
