Another Jewel!

I nipped down to the local pet store this afternoon for a browse, and saw that they had a little Jewel Cichlid in a tank with African rift lake cichlids. It was about half the size of the others and obviously getting mauled. When I pointed out that they shouldn't be kept together I was told that 'they are all Africans and will do fine together'. It's days were obviously numbered so I saw no option other than to take it home with me. He's recovering in the quarentine tank at the moment whilst I decide what to do with him. I think I might try him in the community tank, as he'd be alone, and aggression hopefully won't be an issue if he can't spawn. The other option is the 90gal, but he's so small that the Oscar would probably see him as a snack, and the breeding pair of Jewels already in there probably won't take to kindly to him either!

HEE HEE..Congrads. they are cute little guys. That's sad the LFS didn't want to listen to your advice. I've heard they can go ok in a community. They seem to be pretty calm if not breeding..I know mine are a different species but I think there temperaments are all the same. I've not seen a bit of aggression out of these to but they are by themselves too. Good luck with him. Hope he fits in somewhere.

Congrats on your new Jewel They are so pretty!

I saw a tank of them, at a not so good LFS one time, and they were tearing eachother apart and the owner didn't do anything about it. I wanted to take them home so badly, but I didn't want to give my business to a store that treats its fish badly I am glad that you rescued your little guy!

Well he's looking much better now! I moved him into the Community tank last night, and he seems to be behaving himself at the moment, totally ignoring the Livebearers and Angels. I don't think he'll be able to stay there though, as my Kribs usually live in the community tank. They're in their spawn tank at the moment, but will be returning in a week or so, and I'm not sure how they'll get on. Hopefully they'll be ok, as I just need somewhere for him to live until he's big enough to stand up to the other Cichlids in the 90gal!
