MY Rams have spawned!

I got home yesterday and went to feed my fish... I have been expecting some guppy fry, so when I saw a huge mass of fry swimming around, I thought they were guppys...

I saw the rams gobbling them up and reached my hand in to shoo them away... well they didn't like that and started nipping my hand... that's when it hit me! It's so cool how the parents herd the fry by collecting them in their mouths and spitting them back into the middle of the pile..

I had no idea they even had eggs, they must have been hidden in all the plants and driftwood. They are old enough to be swimming around so I'm guessing they're a few days old...

This worked out really well, because my wife let me go buy another tank so I could have it set up to move them to in a couple of weeks..

I'm very excited, and so are my kids... I picked up some frozen BBS (are the frozen blocks supposed to float? I would have thought they would stay on the bottom).

Anyway, just wanted to share my good fortune, and my funny story...

Congrats!
When I dropped in frozen BBS, it thawed and sunk.
Can't wait to see pics of the little ones.

congrats!

you might want to defrost the blocks in tank water before putting them in the tank.

Congrats! DO NOT use whole cube of BBS, it maybe bit too much provided other mates dont consumed first. Even flake dust from bottom of flake container would do.
When moving, do not net out the fry. Would wait a bit though.

They're all gone...

I actually saw mom eat one and not spit it back out...

That was short lived... now I'm hoping they do it again... I put a piece of red slate where I think they had their eggs and now I'll keep an eye out.

Soon as I see the eggs, I'll move them and Dad to the new tank that is cycling now (provided its done cycling by then).

Very disappointing, but from what I've read, is quite common w/ these guys...

I would advice against removing the parents as even though they may go though more than one more batch of eggs, at some point they will learn otherwise. This will make them better parents and you will end up with better youngsters. I know what you'll be going through as I am currently in the same boat with my 4 ... eggs get laid ... eggs get fanned .... eggs get eaten. As with a lot of things in this hobby, patience pays dividends.
