hex and cichlids?

We have a 30 gallon hex tank that we are currently using as a community tank. It has limestone gravel and structure and a pH of 8.2. We are thinking of moving the community fish to another tank and putting maybe 2 or 3 pairs of African cichlids into this tank. Is this tank large enough for 2 pairs of smallish cichlids? Any suggestions?

Angela is the expert on Africans, she'll be able to help there. Most of the SA Cichlids are very territorial, so you'd probably only be able to do a pair of one of the smaller species, such as Convicts. Some of the Dwarf Cichlids are more peaceful, such as Kribs or Apistos, and can be kept with other community fish, although even they become quite aggressive when spawning.

Malawi's would def be too big for a hex tank, they are bottom dwellers and do not do well in a tank that has a small foot print.
Some dwarf cichilds will do fine, but they are also bottom dwellers (kribs, etc).

Angels are prob the best bet for a hex tank, having a tall tank is great for them.

a pair of convicts would probably be okay in a 30 hex, you could also go with a pair of bolivian rams, german blue rams, or some shell dwellers or kribs.
