Need Info on Raising Jewel Cichlid Fry

hi all,

at work our red jewel's have breed again, but they never make it past a week, So i've decided i'm going have a go at raising them myself.

current water has zero nitrate, nitrite and ammonia - pH 7.5

1. what should i be feeding them on?
2. should i have any decor in the tank?
3. any other info that would be helpfull

Many Thx,
Cordi

(gotta love the irony of my sig)

Usually the parents raise the fry fully, until they are teens.

i know, but they're not.

so i was going to raise them myself untill they're 1cm or so

even if 10 of the 300+ survive, that would be better odds then 0 out of 300

I've had excellent results starting fry on Hikari First Bites. Young fry (less than 2cm.) need 3 or 4 feedings a day for optimal growth. Frozen baby brine shrimp are also excellent food for fry, and allot easier than hatching out live bbs. Good luck with the kids.

Excelent, we randomly got 1 of those this past week at work.. will have to give it a try.

decided to take some of the fry home today (about 50) and rear them in my dwarf shrimp tank. they were all over the place for the first 2 hours but checked on them 10 mins ago and they're all huddled around the bottom of some valis.

the parents still have around 200 to look after, and if the fry last longer in my shrimp tank then they do in their normal tank i will prob take the rest home with me in a few days.. unless they start ''dissapearing'' at a fast rate as usual in which case i'll just take them all home till they're a few cm long

well, i took all but about 30 of the fry home today.. and while i was getting them out of the tank i saw that our last 2 Marble Convicts had fry.

SO now i have about 300 Jewel fry and about 100 Convict Fry in a 50l which i had been using as a planted tank for my Scarlot Badis (Dario Dario) and Bumblebee Gobies.

After watching the Jewel Parents feeding their fry i think i'll just feed them crushed flake for now till they're big enough for high protine foods and baby brine shrimp
