about fish breeding

I am currently breeding guppies &mollies, & would like to get into breeding cichilds too sometime soon, my question is if there are kinds of cichilds that I can put in with my main breeding tank, (55gl) or would I have to get a seporate tank?

i definitely wouldn't mix cichlids (depending on the kind you are looking at) with guppies and mollies. almost ALL cichlids are aggressive spawners, so IMO a separate tank would be your best option i know steveangela1 breeds malawi cichlids and is going to start breeding congos, and i know of a few other members that breed cichlids as well (CHoffman is getting her tank set up for breeding, or it may be done already but my memory is failing me right now ) so they should be able to provide you a lot more specific info than i can.

have you thought about what type of cichlid you'd like to breed?

In my 45G i have 6 guppies, 3 pearl gouramis and a bristle nose pleco with my pair of cockatoo cichlids which have spawned twice since ive had them, but with there eggs prone to getting fungus neither batch of eggs hatched.
They arent too bad when they are guarding the eggs but once they are guarding free swimming fry, they will terrorize all of your other fish.

I now also have a pair of rams in a 15G which are great fish to breed aslong as you have a definite pair and the right water conditions, but these also are aggresive around their free swimming fry.

I would advise getting a tank just for your cichlids to breed in

Yup,
I think that would be your best bet. Get a separate tank. SOme cichlids are awesome parents and do allot of the work for you..I'm going to be breeding Malawi mbuna's and they are mouth brooders. Meaning the mom carries the eggs in her mouth, hatches them and keep them their untill they are free swimming and a good size then she spits them. It's all very interesting but there are thousands of different cichlids all from different lakes...My best advice is RESEARCH!!!...I've been doing it for 3 months now and I still feel uneducated. Good luck and keep us updated. When you find some you like let us know and we can help ya.

If you end up getting cichlids to breed you will def need another tank for the cichlids and another for the fry. The malawi's eat their fry after spitting them. Then the other species I would be very cautious with.

My congos are supose to be monogomous parents where the mom and dad aid in raisiing the fry.
