The pictures dont give the one with blue around the mouth justice. The colors are incredible. I bought the tank with all the fish and theyre about 5 in long or so. Ive identified most of the others, quite a few bumblebee cichlids, but i cant figure out that these 2 are.

Male Nimbochromis venustus (w/ nice color in front) and maybe young male/female in back. Maybe sold as old name Haplochromis venustus.

Wow! I am surprised to hear you had difficulty finding it in the book. Maybe due to so many Scientific Names used on fish. It is one of the first African Cichlids available out of Lake Malawi. Your male specimen is stunning and his colors shuld get more intense as he matures, especially near/during breeding. Gorgeous Fish! Enjoy them as I have enjoyed.

The encyclopedia is from the early 80s, and yeah there is SOOOO many different scientific names its hard to keep track of them all.

im not sure how old he is, but hes about 5-6 in long already. he is stunning. the centerpiece of the tank thats for sure.

I also have 2 darker colored cichlids in the tank that i havent found yet. theyre color patterns are pretty close to bumblebees, but they are all black. the lighter colors are a dark purple and hard to tell apart from the black. Any ideas?

Although cetain mbuna (rock dwellers) and Utaka(open swimmer) are readily recognizable but sometimes very diificult to ID even when viewed in person due to many differents species resemble each other. Any clear pics of fish you described as your first two pics were fantastic. I could see BB behind the male venustus on first pic, I think.
