Pink spots/growth on Firemouth? marks alongside dorsal fin

Hi all,

Tank has been running for over a year - decent ammonia/nitrite/nitrates a bit high, pH 6.6, temp 78F.

Firemouth, Jack Dempsey - smaller JD, GOurami, and tiger barb (I know not a good mix but so far haven't killed each other - this set of fish stick together and collectively attack anything else I put in the tank - go figure).

27gal hex - penguin 500 filter.

My firemouth has this odd pink spot along both sides of its dorsal fin. I'm hoping its not fin rot, but in any case the gourami does seem to be nipping at it (I saw him do it at least twice). Its sort of a growth and looks like what I would expect a fish scab to look like - I can get pics later tonight.

Any ideas what if anything I should do?

When I had a JD I raised him with a Firemouth also and they got along just fine.

It doesn't sound like fin-rot. Usually white tipped fins is a sign and fraying fins. I am not sure about the pink spots. Someone should be along to help with that. Could be just from the Gourmai nipping. I have a Pearl and he likes to do a little of that himself. Little buggers they are, lol!!!

You say your NitrAtes are a bit high, so how high? If it's more then 20 then you need to do a partial water change to lower it.

Pics would be great!

Also, it would be a better idea to get a much bigger tank. Having 2 JD's in a 27gal hex is too small. JD's get up to about 8-10 inches. You need at least a 55 gal or larger. Kissing Gourmai's get large too.

A pic later will help lots. The jack isn't a good mix for that tank, a hex tank has a very small foot print.

a pink spot could be the beginnings of an ammonia burn, do you have exact readings? with that many fish (and fish with such HUGE bioloads) and that size tank your cycle probably can't keep up with all the waste, i'd suggest looking into getting a bigger tank or re-homing/selling/returning some of the fish.

if i haven't said it before, welcome to fishlore!
