just wondering what other types of cichlid i could put in with our malawis

If you are going to stock malawi's there isn't any other fish that are compatable. There are hundreds of malawi species to choose from however.

Search on cichild forum for a cookie cutter (to help stock) for your size tank, then on the profiles you can see the different species.

Yup! I heard chichilds are aggresive.

mine all seem ok so far, we have 13 in a 4ft tank. hard part is trying to work out whats male and whats female, even lookin at all the pics im still none the wiser

If you can post some pics I can help. I bred mbuna, maybe I can help. THe 13 in a 4foot tank is a good number.
