What's so different?

I guess i just don't get why it seems that cichlid care is so different from other kinds of fish? I'm trying to think towards the future for my fish-keeping, and i hate cookie-cutter setups (wow, danios, tetras, and barbs, imagine that...) Don't get me wrong, to each their own and if you have said setup and like it that's great, the most important thing is you like your own fish stock. For me, i like being at least SOMEWHAT original.

I'm looking into a few different ways to get my originality in the future, and one is figuring out a mix of cichlids, so that's why i'm inquiring. What's so special/different about keeping them?

Thanks in advance

Attitude they all have one thats why you have to be careful what you mix together.
Their breed/spawning/parenting habits make them very unique.

Whatever you do research before you do get any cichlids. Malawi cichlids are hard to get a mix that works. SOuth and Central American fish seem to pair off and some get nasty.
There are cookie cutter set ups for cichlids too
