| fish identification and advice Hi everyone. I'm from a little city in the philippines. We only have about 5-8 petshops available in the whole city and cichlids that they sell are not labeled properly and the owners dont even have a single clue where they are from. they all just say that you can mix all cichlids. DUH! i would like to ask for your help in the identification of some and tips on what species are compatible. i will be uploading pictures of the cichlids or their name either later or 2morow. hope you could help me. there is no one i could ask real helpful advice here. and one more thing people treat their aquarium like a fish tank in a chinese restaurant. Thanks in advance for the people who could offer their help |

Instead, an easier method would be for you to pick the fish you like and then ask or research what its needs are and what might be compatible with it.
However, if your aquarium info section is correct, the first thing you should do is read and understand the Nitrogen Cycle so that you can make sure your tank is properly cycled, giving any new fish their best chances for survival.
Once you have an understanding of how to cycle the tank and pick out a cichlid you really want to keep, it will be much easier to plan (or to help plan, if you ask us for advice) how to stock the tank. |

The plecos also need softer water and the malawi cichilds and tang cichlids are too aggressive for the plecos, for a 85g tank pleco "s" is not a good idea, that would be really overstocking. They poop more than they help.
The Met Estherae (red zebra) is a great starter malawi mbuna, they aren't severely aggressive and they are hardy. The P. Saulosi however are highly agressive and when stocking a cichild tank you do not need to be putting in different levels of aggressive cichilds.
Here is a link to the sticky for setting up cichlid tanks, it has a lot of help on stocking: For cichlid newbies:How to set up cichlid tanks |
