Malawi Cichlids, all different sizes!!!

Hello!!!

We've a beautiful Malawi tank set-up. I was just wondering how long does it take for cichlids to become fully grown?

We have a number of different species including red-top zebras, yellow labs, pseudotropheus, electric blue johannis, melanochromis auratus. The yellow labs were a recent addition are are considerably larger (appox.6-7cms) than their tank mates. All others are between 1 and 3 cms.

Thanks!!!

Well it depends. If you feed them a lot and do lots of water changes you will get a faster growth rate. By the time they are a year old they are full grown usually.
In the future you may have some major aggression issues with the johannies and the auratus. With super aggressive species like the Melanochromis you should have only 1 species per tank, same with Metriclima species and other aggressive types.

I completly agree w/ her, in fact you may have issues keeping the more aggressive species w/ the less aggressive species, ie keeping the auartus w/ the labs. Especially because of the yellow colors when they get full grown they may get into some major fights, not the little push around skirmishes either, the come home and find one beat to death.

The Mel species and Met species of malawis are the trouble makers of the mbuna. I keep kenyi which are some highly aggressive mbuna they can cause some serious trouble at times.

Yeah it is best to keep Malawi of the same aggression level in one tank. It is much easier on the fish and your nerves. When I first got into Malawi cichlids I had too many single males....it was getting to the point that I would have to put my hands in the water and shake my fist at them to distract them for minutes.
Trust me shouting at a mean cichlid makes no difference.

Yea, its pretty bad when you spend more time shouting at your cichilds than your 3 year old... lol

One thing I have learned, same aggression levels in one tank, and I am really not a fan of high aggression level cichlids, my kenyi's have been w/ me from the first cichlids I bought or I would have got rid of them. They are like my kids.

No, but it startles the poop out of a frontosa! My big front was having it out with my dominant lab. The labs HEAD was in the front's mouth! I jumped off the couch and yelled at them and now the frontosa is scared of me.
