For cichlid newbies:How to set up cichlid tanks

This is very important!!!
Please research your cichlid before assuming the can go together. I still see some members here not having the right type of cichlids together here...it's driving me
Malawi cichlids go with only Malawi cichlids, same with the fish from each lake in Africa. African cichlids are going to have much different what parameters than one from this side of the world. S/C American cichlids their waters are softer more acidic, lower ph and the smaller cichlids are good in planted tanks.
Fish usually have different levels of aggression from mild to highly aggressive. A mild cichlid like an angelfish from the Amazon area should NOT be kept with convicts from who are the most aggressive cichlid for its size. Convicts will tear them to shreds.

Here's a site which has a lot of info on how to set up your cichlids tanks:

Maybe someone could sticky this so newbies can find it better.

Thank's Allie! I love it when I can find lots of information on something in one place. I appreciate all of the help that you have been giving. The links to the "cookie cutter" set ups you gave me the other day were great, too.

What "cookie cutter" set ups? I'd love to see them.

Thread has been stickied, so you shouldn't have to bump anymore. (Though feel free to continue discussion/addition, of course).

EDIT: Well i wasn't quick enough.

Allie, do you have any experience with Buffalo Head Cichlids? I'm planning on getting one, and from what I've read they're on the peaceful side and get along well with "regular" middle to top dwelling tropical fish since they mainly stick to the bottom. I'm planning on keeping mine with tetras, a swordtail, and a gourami unless this is going to pose a problem.

Nope sorry I don't. I wouldn't keep any African cichlids exept kribs with those fish. They'd probably kill them if they were in breeding mode. All cichlids get aggressive during that time.

Gourami Girl, When I read this page about Buffalo Heads at the bottom he asks for questions so I wonder if you asked him if he would have an answer for you. Good luck.

I don't really know how to go about finding compatible cichlids for them...I know you're not supposed to mix cichlids from the different lakes, but I haven't been able to find which "lake" these guys come from. One site put them in the "misc." category. If I knew which lake to mix them with then maybe I could do some more research.

GG,
They are from the congo river basin so they are not from any of the lakes. I was suggesting that you ask the guy who wrote the article on cichlid-forum your questions. There are other fish from Africa but not from the three lakes. I wonder if these would be compatible?
