Getting New Cichlids
Ok so Im planning of getting rid of my community tank fish. I might just keep my tiger barbs and blue rams because i keep hearing that Cichlids can be just as aggressive as tiger barbs. What i was wondering was what kind of american cichlids could i get that would be suitable for my 40 gal?

i have a mated pair of convicts in my 60G tank, but if you do get a pair they will chase anything that comesi n their territory.

just dont get a mating pair of convicts, and they are tolerable with others...provided you have some nice caves or decorations for them to make their own!!
they are awesome critters and very personable...but get a mating pair, and they will totally take over your tank to protect the babies...

I really like the gymogeophagus. You can look them up on www.cichlidforum.com. They are gorgeous fish. You could also do keyholes in a 40 gallon. They would do well with the rams but not the tiger barbs. Angels do well with rams too, but again, not with tiger barbs.

Queen Arabesque
Bristle Nose
King Tiger

yeah, a pair of convicts are extremely territorial, ive spoilt mine, they share a 65G tank with just 1 brown sucking loach and one bristle nose pleco.
Kribensis are cool, get a male and around 2-3 females and givethe females a cave each and they should get along.

You can put bothof them together. For one kribs are from Africa and are mild aggressive. Two Convicts are highly aggressive and from Central America. They have different requirements. The convicts WILL kill whatever else is in the tank when breeding.

They are a pairing fish so you would only need a male and a female.

Hey Allie,
I think you meant to say that he CAN'T put both of them together, but I am not sure. Just wanted to clarify.

I think that the tiger barbs would be fine. I would be worried about the rams though.

I have not seen any rams that I have kept display any aggressive behavior toward eachother. Where did you get this information? If you are willing to get rid of the barbs, a pair of angels and a couple schools of tetras would make a nice tank

IMO, rams and angels would make a very colorful and intersting tank. If you got rid of all of your existing fish, you could go with some small mbuna. You could do a tank with 6 yellow labs or 11 demasoni. Check out www.cichlidforum.com. They have a lot of good info and cookie cutter setups that you can use as a guide
