Today was a big fish day for me! My Sahara sand arrived late yesterday, so today was the day to rework my cichlid tank. The sand adds a nice texture to the tank. Unfortunately, my pretty structure had to go a week or so back as it did not please the fish. Now I have a carefully jumbled pile of rocks atop several inches of Sahara sand.
The tank seems a bit more aggressive than before, but that may be because they are staking out new territories and recovering from the stress of apartment living (29 g) while their home was remodeled. Sort of like a "While You Were Out" for fish.
Now, I knew cichlids would dig - my Ice Blue tried to dig the river pebbles but they were too big for his mouth to hold very long- but throwing sand is news. The Ice Blue swims about the tank, ducks under a rock, and comes up with a mothful of sand. Then he proceeds to strew it (throw it) around the tank. The wild msobos haven't taken up this practice.
On the aggression, I turned out the lights and gave them some food ( they didn't eat much bfast) but they are still being pretty fiesty. May have to redo the rocks - again! We'll see. Plus I have the female greshakei on the way as well. That should help too.
I'll take pics after they calm down in a day or so.
The other part of the big day was that my plecos arrived (I wrote about that on the pleco page.)
