Cichlid behavior

Not sure if this would/could pertain to other cichlids or fish fro that matter. Last night I was playing playstation in the living room and heard the fish in the dining room splashing around. To give you an idea, from where I was sitting, they are about 15ft away.

I was watching them and they 3 of them (2 females and the yellow lab) were swimming up and down the glass and across the back. The male red fin was just kind of sitting in the middle watching them? lol Anyways, they would splash while they were going up and down and across the back. Also the yellow lab looked like he was trying to swim UP the HOB filter we have on it. It's a TetraTec PF300 and has little 90* spouts on it that help aim the current. From where I was he was literally trying to go "up stream".

Anybody else experience this or know where I can read about it? I tried a google search but didn't really know how to word that.

Thanks for any help and input.

Our silly fish do that all the time. I think they just like to swim in different directions. Yellow labs and acei seem to really enjoy swimming UP the glass. lol

lol I thought it was weird as I never seen them do it that much and the fact that it looked like he was trying to swim up the spout was kind of odd. I don't think I have seen them that active at night before. Glad to know it is normal Thanks

I am thinking so too butterfly.

Allie, do you think, that most/all of your cichlids love it? I'm not saying our lfs knows all, but when I was doing the ugj's, the fish guy was like they really don't have a preference. Is that more of their personality then whether they like it or not you think?

I had a power head in there and still do, just use it for the jets now.

It seems that the Lake Malawi cichlids love current...they looks so silly when they try swimming in the HOB filter flow.

Think I should use my 1000GPH pump in there to give them something to swim against?? lol JK And just come to think of it, one of the females would sit in the bow part of the tank looking like it has "issues", but that is where one of the jets point. Her tail would be down and head up and kinda just "hovering" there and wiggling slowly. lol Silly fish. lol
