I've noticed that my jewel cichlid, who is pretty much a brownish/greenish color, occasionally turns red, not dark red, but definetally a red hue. Does anyone know why it does this?

I know they eventually turn red, but didn't know they could change back and forth, it's actually pretty cool.

Also, I have a blue acara that will turn dark when it's in the rocks, but will turn lighter when it comes out of the rocks, very weird, but cool. It will have stripes when it's in the rocks and they will disappear when it comes out.

So does anyone know why they change colors?

Many cichlids change colours according to their moods, water conditions, breeding etc.

The Jewel cichlid turns bright red when in spawning mode.
