Some Apistogramma Borelli questions

Hey, my new plan is to put a pair of these in my 10 gallon. I do have a few questions though. First, I heard that they'll need caves, but how big in diameter? I have a bunch of PVC pipe I could use, I just don't know how big the diameter should be. Secondly, what is the ideal temperature for these guys? I've read 69-75? Also, would live plants be okay in here? I want this tank to look natural, but I'm not sure what their natural habitat looks like. Thanks for the help,

Cory

A.Borelli is one of the hardier of it's species, but still has certain needs.

Temps can be from 67 - 76 or so, and they like soft water. pH shouldn't be much over 7.

Not only are plants okay, but necessary. They need a heavily planted tank, with lots of hiding spaces - driftwood, rocks, caves..

They also need a dark substrate to feel secure. Black Eco-complete would be a good choice for both fish and plants!

Well, so far I have everything covered, but do you think a 10 will be okay for a pair? Thanks,

Cory

Here is what I have used and am sure many people also use for their cichlids. From everything i've been told so far with our cichlids (Red Fin and Lab) is that you can overcrowd a little to keep aggression down. I don't think it would hurt them as long as you have good filtration. Most if not all Cichlids are dirty.

When you click it, it should go to the fish you are asking about. Will just kind of add to what Barbrella has already told you.

Hope it helps.

*Also, found this on Planted Tank forums pertaining to your fish.

The overcrowding of cichlids applies only to Africans. Never overcrowd other species like Apistogrammas. They need pristine water, so keep populations very low.

Cichlids are not dirty, unless you're talking about very large species, like Oscars.

10 gallons is very small, but doable with enough plants and hiding places. Larger is always better.

Actually your link doesn't lead to Plantgeek.net it leads to The planted tank which is another planted tank forum. Might want to fix
that link
Beautiful fish there. Dwarf Cichlids never fail to amaze me in the Colors and attitudes.

Both are excellent planted tank sites. I just have more experience at Plantgeek.net and navigate it more easily.

Well, my 10 gallon that was going to be my Cichlid tank is now full of Zebra Danio's, so if I want a another one, I'm going to aim for a 15-20 gallon, that will be a lot better for these guys. Thanks for the help
